What is an Injunction for Protection?
An injunction for protection is a court order designed to protect an individual from harm or abuse. The purpose is to protect the petitioner from a respondent by legally prohibiting the respondent from engaging in certain actions that could cause injury or distress to the petitioner. If granted, the respondent will be prohibited from contacting the petitioner or coming near him or her. Unless the court deems other arrangement necessary. Violating an injunction for protection can lead to legal consequences, including arrest and criminal charges.
An injunction for protection may include various provisions, such as ordering the respondent to cease all contact with the petitioner, requiring the individual to stay a certain distance away from the petitioner’s home, work or school, mandating the surrender of firearms or weapons, granting the petitioner temporary custody of children or pets, and implementing other measures to ensure the safety of the petitioner.
