Physical Abuse

Physical abuse in a relationship involves using physical force to harm, control, or intimidate a partner. Physical power is often about power and control and may escalate over time. Physical abuse can have lasting effects on a person’s physical and emotional health. Often, physical abuse is accompanied by other forms of abuse, such as psychological, emotional, or sexual abuse. Examples of physical abuse in relationships include:

  • Hitting, punching, or slapping

  • Kicking

  • Strangling

  • Restraining

  • Throwing objects in an attempt to harm

  • Use of weapons
