Financial abuse refers to a situation where one partner tries to control the other’s financial resources, typically in order to make them financially dependent and gain power and control in the relationship. Common signs of financial abuse include:
Withholding money - not allowing the other person to manage their own finances
Controlling spending - preventing their partner from making purchases
Preventing employment - discouraging employment or sabotaging their job opportunities
Threatening financial harm - threats to ruin their partner’s financial stability
Tips for safety planning around any financial situation:
Have originals or copies of all personal documents such as social security cards, birth certificates, tax documents, identification. And keep them some place safe.
Check credit report and get information on all bills or accounts with your information.
Put aside money for emergency purposes.
