Every survivor deserves access to services, safety, and justice. Survivors in the LGBTQ community face unique challenges and barriers to safety. We are here to serve every person because love shouldn’t hurt.

Any person can suffer at the hands of an abuser, and that includes any type of intimate partner dynamic.

While intimate partner violence in LGBTQ+ communities share many similarities with heterosexual battering, there are unique challenges and barriers faced by LGBTQ+ individuals such as:

  • Threats to “out” or to reveal HIV status to others

  • Reinforcing fears that no-one will help a partner because they are LGBTQ+ or that for this reason, the partner “deserves” the abuse.

  • Justifying abuse with the notion that a partner is not “really” LGBTQ+

  • Portraying the violence as mutual and even consensual

  • Seeking help can mean coming out.
