The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community is often subject to Intimate Partner Violence as well. Unfortunately, many people do not understand how male-male or female-female abuse fits the mold of domestic violence or sexual assault. The LGBT community is subject to those crimes as well and should not fear reaching out to the Hotline or their local shelters for help.
Common barriers the LGBT community face are:
Poor or inconsistent law enforcement or criminal justice support
Lack of accessible and sensitive services
Individual's fear of being outed
Feelings of hopelessness and/or fear of reprisal
It is important to know that domestic violence and sexual assault do not discriminate and that the rates of DV and SA are similarly high to heterosexual rates.
